Directing X-Suit: A Los Angeles Commercial Director's Story
Commercial Director Los Angeles: a while back, X-Suit came to us directly for a commercial where I served as writer, director and executive producer. There was no separate creative agency on this one. Studio Supreme handled the concept and creative direction as well as the production, working closely with the brand from day one. We brought on a local Los Angeles producer to run the ground game, and the result was an exercise in showing innovation through tight, precise execution.

The Vision and Collaborative Genesis
The journey of the X-Suit commercial began with a clear objective: to highlight the revolutionary features of the suit, combining style with unparalleled comfort and flexibility. Working closely with X-Suit and the creative minds at Studio Supreme, my initial task as writer was to distill these core attributes into a compelling narrative concept. I aimed for a visual language that communicated sophistication and performance without relying solely on exposition, letting the suit's design and the wearer's movement speak volumes about its innovation.

Developing the concept involved extensive brainstorming to identify key scenarios where the X-Suit's advantages would be most apparent and visually engaging. We focused on creating situations that allowed the suit to be showcased in various dynamic environments, emphasizing its adaptability from high-stakes professional settings to more relaxed, active moments. This approach ensured that every frame contributed to illustrating the product's unique selling propositions, making its benefits immediately clear to the audience. Because the project leaned heavily on stunts and parkour, we brought on Paul Darnell as stunt and action choreographer, an Emmy winner with credits on The Mandalorian, Tenet and Baby Driver. Our lead was Vladislav Litvinenko, an incredible stunt performer and LA-based influencer whose physicality carried the whole piece.
Pre-production was crucial, but simpler than most commercial shoots: with no agency in the loop, alignment was directly between Studio Supreme and X-Suit. That directness let us move fast, covering stylistic choices, casting and location scouting without an extra layer of approvals slowing things down.
Filming Locations in Los Angeles
Choosing Los Angeles as our primary filming location was a strategic decision that offered immense creative and logistical advantages for the X-Suit commercial. The city provides an unparalleled array of diverse backdrops, from sleek modern architecture that perfectly complements the suit's contemporary design to vibrant urban landscapes and sophisticated interior spaces. This variety allowed us to craft a rich visual tapestry, showcasing the X-Suit's versatility across different scenarios and environments, enhancing its aspirational appeal.

Our scouting efforts in Los Angeles focused on identifying locations that visually reinforced the X-Suit's brand identity. We sought out spaces that conveyed innovation, professionalism, and an active lifestyle, finding a mix of contemporary office buildings, dynamic city streets, and elegant, minimalist interiors. Each chosen location was carefully selected not just for its aesthetic appeal, but for its ability to serve as a functional set piece, enabling specific shots that highlighted the suit’s flexibility and form.
Leveraging Los Angeles's robust production infrastructure was also a significant benefit. The city boasts a deep pool of highly skilled crew members, state-of-the-art equipment rentals, and efficient permitting processes for filming. This established ecosystem allowed us to execute complex production plans with precision and adaptability, ensuring that we could achieve our creative goals within the given timelines, a crucial factor when producing a high-quality commercial project.
Directing Techniques for Dynamic Performance
Directing talent for the X-Suit commercial required a nuanced approach, focusing on capturing authentic movement and a confident demeanor. I guided the actors to embody the suit's promise of freedom and style, encouraging natural, fluid motions that demonstrated its stretch and comfort. This involved working closely with them on subtle physical cues and expressions, ensuring their performance resonated with the suit's innovative design and reinforced its core benefits without overt verbal communication.

Our camera techniques were meticulously planned to emphasize the suit's unique fabric and sophisticated cut. We utilized dynamic camera movements, including sweeping tracking shots and precise close-ups, to highlight the material's elasticity and the garment's tailored fit as the talent moved. Lens choices were critical in achieving a sharp, modern aesthetic, ensuring every detail, from stitching to texture, was rendered with clarity and visual appeal, elevating the suit's perceived quality.
Pacing and rhythm were central to the commercial's overall impact. I envisioned a brisk, energetic flow that maintained audience engagement from start to finish, reflecting the fast-paced lives of the target demographic. This meant carefully orchestrating the sequence of shots, transitions, and scene changes to build momentum, creating a visual rhythm that felt both sophisticated and dynamic, ultimately making the X-Suit feel indispensable to a modern lifestyle.
Crafting the Narrative Through Visual Storytelling
Even in a short commercial format, crafting a compelling narrative is paramount. For X-Suit, the story arc was designed to subtly illustrate a transformation, showing how the suit empowers the wearer through various daily activities. We aimed to communicate the benefits visually, allowing the audience to infer the suit's comfort and versatility through the ease and confidence of the talent's movements, rather than relying on direct dialogue or explicit claims.

Visual storytelling elements played a crucial role in reinforcing the brand message. We employed a sophisticated color palette, clean compositions, and strategic lighting to create a premium and modern aesthetic. The interplay of light and shadow was used to sculpt the suit's form, emphasizing its tailored silhouette, while the overall visual tone conveyed a sense of aspiration and understated luxury, aligning perfectly with the X-Suit's market positioning.
The role of sound design and music in elevating the commercial's impact cannot be overstated. We selected a contemporary, energetic score that complemented the visual rhythm and enhanced the feeling of innovation and dynamism. Subtly integrated sound effects, such as the rustle of fabric or the ambient sounds of a city, added depth and realism, immersing the viewer further into the X-Suit's world and making the experience more engaging and memorable.
Navigating Production Challenges and Solutions
Every production, regardless of its scale, presents its unique set of challenges, and the X-Suit commercial was no exception. One specific hurdle involved coordinating complex multi-location shoots within a tight schedule, demanding meticulous planning to maximize our time on set. As Executive Producer, I focused on proactive problem-solving, ensuring that all logistical elements, from crew movements to equipment transfers, were seamlessly integrated to prevent delays.
On set, my role as director involved making swift, informed decisions to adapt to unforeseen circumstances, such as changing light conditions or unexpected background elements. I fostered an environment of collaboration and flexibility within the crew, encouraging creative solutions that maintained our high visual standards. This adaptive approach ensured that we could consistently capture the desired shots and maintain the commercial's artistic integrity, regardless of on-the-day variations.
The post-production phase was where the commercial truly came together, meticulously refining every frame to achieve the final polished look. This involved detailed editing to perfect the pacing, precise color grading to enhance the visual aesthetic, and expert sound mixing to balance music and effects. My involvement extended through these crucial stages, ensuring the final delivery not only met but exceeded the initial creative vision for the X-Suit brand.
A story from set
We were scouting locations with Paul, driving around in his very cool red Jeep while working out the different action beats. At one point we needed our hero to jump a fence, and I found myself looking at Paul's Jeep. He caught the look on my face before I said a word and just said, "You wanna use my car for the landing?"
That's exactly what we did. His Jeep became the landing pad for the parkour sequence, our hero ultimately jumping straight onto it. Paul is a truly talented man, and a few weeks after we wrapped, he won the Emmy for Outstanding Stunt Coordination for his work on The Mandalorian. We were lucky to have him.
