Commercial Director Bangkok: as a commercial director in Bangkok, I've had the privilege of helming a diverse range of projects, each offering unique creative challenges and rewards. In 2024, Mbrella asked me to take on the exciting role of Director, crafting the entire concept for a high-profile global campaign and commercial for Sephora Thailand. I like to put things I personally like and feel connected to into any ideas, and for this specific project, Sephora wanted to showcase their store as a transformative experience around beauty.

Then, after some thinking, I found the perfect idea for the brand, deeply rooted in my own love for photo booths!

A photobooth is a place where you like to go with friends, ideally dress up, and forge great memories; we aren't living in a photobooth entirely the same, but always with a memento we often carry with us through the ages. I proposed this unique idea to the brand, and they loved it!

Good to also add that months later, a few high-end brands came up with the same idea; did they emulate our ads?

I guess we will never know!

This project was a deep dive into the essence of beauty, innovation, and the meticulous craft required to bring a global brand's vision to life. Filmed entirely in the vibrant city of Bangkok, Thailand, this commercial allowed us to leverage the city's incredible resources and my team's expertise to create something truly special.

For me, every commercial is an opportunity to tell a story, even if it's just a few seconds long, and Sephora provided a canvas for exploring modern beauty narratives.

My role as Director and Concept for the Sephora commercial meant I was involved from the initial creative spark through to the director's final cut. The goal was to capture Sephora's distinct identity, blending sophistication with an accessible, empowering message about beauty. This involved a precise approach to visual storytelling, ensuring every frame resonated with the brand's aesthetic.

We focused on dynamic camera movements and artful lighting to highlight the products and the models, creating an atmosphere that felt both luxurious and aspirational. The collaboration with the client, Sephora, was key, as we worked closely to translate their marketing objectives into a compelling visual narrative.

Filming in Bangkok: A Director's Perspective

Bangkok, Thailand, proved to be an exceptional backdrop for this commercial. As a commercial director based in Bangkok, I'm constantly impressed by the city's ability to host productions of any scale, offering world-class crews, state-of-the-art equipment, and a versatile array of locations. For Sephora, we needed a wide neat studio that could host our street built and natural light as well so we could mix both “artificial” and natural lighting, and Bangkok delivered. We also shot the whole photo campaigns and plenty of product videos as we was shooting the main film, so we needed a venue that could host all those multiples sets under the same unique roof!

Our team meticulously scouted for the location first, once we locked our ideal spot we prepared and built different sets that would complement the beauty products, using natural light where possible and augmenting it with sophisticated lighting setups to achieve that coveted glow. Our built was more stylistic than realistic in our approach, and for Sephora, it added a subtle layer of contemporary chic to the overall aesthetic.

The Craft Behind the Sephora Commercial

The creation of a beauty commercial like Sephora is a testament to meticulous craft. Every detail, from the styling and makeup to the camera lenses and post-production color grading, is crucial. We employed advanced cinematography techniques with the usage of motion control robotic arm to ensure the camera movements, products and models looked their absolute best, also focusing on textures, colors, and the way light interacted with them.

The editing process was equally vital, weaving together shots to create a seamless flow that built anticipation and showcased the transformative power of Sephora's offerings. It was a rigorous yet rewarding journey, culminating in a commercial that I believe truly encapsulates the brand's spirit and my vision as a director. The finished product for Sephora in 2024 stands as a strong example of what collaborative craft can achieve.

A story from set POV

Shooting this commercial was a fun experience; the cast was quite eclectic, and the crew was totally on board. One of my favorite experiences was setting up the motion-control choreography with my local DP, Bhurin, a young Thai artist with whom I have cooperated a couple of times already, and building a photobooth from scratch. I love photobooths so much, so doing this process was super cool!
